Empowering literate women from less fortunate communities to become leaders, storytellers and mentors for young girls between ages 7-12.
The Chunri Readers Book Club focuses on empowering literate women from less fortunate communities as leaders, story readers and mentors for young girls between 7-12 years of age. The program engages, trains, and inspires literate women in communities (Chunri Bajis), providing them with the knowledge and confidence needed to read stories aloud to children in their neighborhoods. The Chunri Readers Book Club pilot was launched in February 2023 in Lyari, Karachi in collaboration with Dreams of Youth Official.
Who is a Chunri Baji?
Our Chunri Bajis are trained, literate young women who will become changemakers in their own community, leading conversations that develop socio-emotional learning, compassion, tolerance and a spirit of shared humanity. They empower and support girls around them by creating safe spaces for them to share ideas, have meaningful discussions and read impactful stories. The Chunri Bajis selected via an interview process, are trained on how to effectively conduct read aloud sessions. They then connect with a small group of young girls belonging to their neighborhood for eight story sessions. Chunri Bajis are provided with a library system for them to manage book lending and independent reading. They are supplied with a book bag, books and props. After each reading session, Chunri Bajis engage girls in activities relevant to the stories. Through our stories and read aloud sessions, important conversations and valuable discussions aimed at empowering the girls, spreading awareness, and encouraging them to pursue goals that are beneficial for them.
Through this initiative we are working towards achieving SDG Goal 5
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Through our Chunri Readers Book Club we want all females to understand that gender equality is a fundamental human right and a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
By engaging the young women of the community to inspire the young girls around them; who will then grow up and continue to read to those younger than themselves, we hope to create an independent ecosystem of strong female readers and listeners within a single community.
