GoRead.pk is a socially conscious, nationwide movement dedicated to reading developmentally appropriate stories to children in underprivileged communities. Our goal is to bring about social change through joyful story read-aloud sessions, with an emphasis on Tarbia (character development), Ehsaas (compassion) and Adab (literature). Our stories are in Urdu, English as well as Pakistan’s regional languages. Research shows that joyful story read-aloud sessions develop students language skills, contribute to their personal development and play a role in improving children’s future, one story at a time.
GoRead.pk is a scalable model that aims to serve children across Pakistan. Our mobile app will facilitate the program by connecting volunteers with the organisation, sharing resources and guidelines, tools for measuring impact and efficient connectivity to ensure that we are achieving our goals. Following our ethos: پرہو اور پڑھاؤ (parho aur parhao) the organisation also commits to encouraging the habit of reading for pleasure in its volunteers. We will share news worthy, culturally relevant and enriching reading resources with them, via the app, thus contributing to a knowledgeable, better informed society,
GoRead.pk realizes that in order for children to develop a love for reading, story listening experiences must be reinforced by the opportunity to read independently. Children must have access to story books that are appealing and joyful. Our mobile library system provides children with the opportunity to borrow a book a week from GoRead.pk’s own library.
Interactive discussions after each story is read allow children a safe space to express their thoughts and ideas. In Pakistan’s current educational scenario, children hardly ever have this opportunity.
GoRead.pk is a non-profit organisation, registered as a company set up under Section 42 of the Companies Act, 2017.
• Gender equality
• Respect for all
• Shared humanity
- Our philosophy is based on the Ripple effect – the continuing and spreading results of reading to and with children can have far reaching effects. Each caring adult who joins our movement is creating ripples that support the personal development of the children we serve.
- When caring adults huddle with children around a story, the nurturing environment they create does wonders for children’s self-esteem and arouses their curiosity.
- Access to attractive story books increases their chances of developing a love for reading, an essential building block to academic as well as non-cognitive skills development.
- Stories can play a role in developing in children positive character qualities, feelings of nationalism and pride in local communities and cultures, as well as cultivate a sense of shared humanity with the world at large.
